Thanks to the generosity of Sun Health team members and residents, the Sun Health SHINE (Sun Health Involvement Never Ends) Committee was able to raise $2,960 to purchase backpacks and stuff them full school supplies for 60 foster children who live in West Valley group homes.

In addition, with the donated dollars, SHINE was able to purchase a $25 gift card for each child to be used toward clothing or shoes for the school year.

And we are happy to share that each child is receiving a few additional surprises in addition to the backpack, supplies and gift card.

The Colonnade residents Sharon Pearson and Jean Bradford have spent months lovingly making pillowcases for each child.

Jean and Sharon spent many hours washing fabric, ironing, sewing and pressing the fabric to perfection.

“We would really like it if foster kids can choose a favorite,” our magical seamstresses shared. Sharon and Jean went out of their way to be sure the pillow cases had a variety of patterns, including Star Wars, dogs, planes, fire engines, hearts, alligators, African animals, and coordinating patterns. “We experienced great joy while thinking of these children as we stitched.”

And thanks to Jaime Torres, practice manager of the Center for Health & Wellbeing, each kiddo will be receiving a coupon for a free large pizza! We appreciate Little Caesars generosity and give a shout out to Jaime for securing the donation – a great treat for all of these kids and teens as they head back to school.

All of these gifts will be distributed by the nonprofit foster care association, OCJ Kids (Opportunity Community and Justice for Kids) starting this week.
